Over 35 OD sports boats competed in 18 to 20knot breezes during the RPAYC OD sports boat midwinters in early July. There was strong competition in each of the classes, which included Etchells, Melges24, Stars, Ynglings and Elliott 7s. Each class had it's own start in the six sprint race series. Teams also relished the added intensity of rounding the gates with boats favouring different angles.

Top 40, with Peter Merrington (helm), Geoff Bonouvrie and Ian McKillop on board, was clear winner in the Etchells fleet, compiling an impressive five firsts and one second. Odyssey was second with Jill Connell (helm), Wade Morgan (coach), and Steve Tait crewing with her. Allen Stormon (helm), Gary Holder and Iain Bishop brought Gezzabelle home for a very close third place.

RPAYC aims to build this midwinter regatta to become a 'must do' annual event for sailors of Etchells and other OD sports boats. Next year's date will most likely be July 11 and 12, 2015. Bruce Dey, the Pittwater Etchells Fleet Captain, commented, "The RPAYC Midwinters provided a rare opportunity for Etchells to compete in OD regatta in the Pittwater/Sydney area during winter. We are confident that Etchells sailors want some OD competitions locally during winter and expect the RPAYC Midwinters to grow into an annual iconic event for the Class."

The Pittwater Etchells fleet based at RPAYC is keen to encourage sailors to experience the joy of sailing Etchells and to join this highly competitive and fun, one design class. For further information contact or phone the RPAYC sailing office on (02) 9998 3763.
