Over the weekend of 12 and 13 July, the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club hosted the inaugural Mid-Winter International One Design Regatta. A total of 35 boats competed in the following classes; Etchells, Star, Melges 24, Yngling and Elliott 7.

Winter weather was a good as one could expect, with wind varying from 13 to gusts of 20 knots and were a little shifty on the Saturday, but pretty consistent on Sunday.

The race team, headed by Elaine Fowler, handled the multiple starts and course shifts in a most professional manner and her team of on water assistants are to be congratulated on their diligence.

Of the seven Etchells competing, Geoff Bonouvrie and Billy Merrington with Ian McKillop (AUS1332) took five of the six races. Jill Connell, assisted by Wade Morgan and Steve Tate (AUS 1254) finished in second, just the one point ahead of Allen Storman (AUS 1385).

The courses were maximised at one nautical mile, hence all racing was extremely close and rewarding.

This will now be an annual fixture and possibly we can do a deal where boats returning from Mooloolaba can be housed between events to build the competing fleet.
