Cruising and racing down the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia with eleven Beneteau First 45s was just about the best possible sailing holiday imaginable.

Fantastic sailing in ideal conditions, magnificent scenery, historic culture and with a group of like minded sailors from all the Australian States, several Etchells crews enjoyed very close one design racing of another kind.

Joining the beautifully fitted out yachts in Split, we then spent the next 14 days sailing from idyllic harbours and bays down the coast and islands of Croatia to Dubrovnik, where we spent a further two nights in this historic city.

Every second day was a race day and we enjoyed sailing in 6-16knot breezes. After seven races, just the one point separated first and second places, which certainly proves that the racing was as close as we have in our Etchells. Sydney Etchells sailors, Tony Brown, John Dorling and Richard Brown, with their wives also on board, won from Richard Lawson and Richard Hammond, who were also ably assisted by sailing wives. Third place went to a team from WA, which also included ex-Etchells sailor, Ken Waller, with several sports boats enthusiasts in the crew.

Post-race dinners were usually at a tavern or restaurant within a few metres from the boats. Trevor and Maggie Joyce have really refined these Beneteau First 45 One Design Rallies and the organisation was seamless, with marina spots waiting for us, first class hotels before and after the rally, and a series of most enjoyable post-race dinners.

Mariner Boating Holidays will once again be offering a prize for the next Sydney Etchells Mini-Regatta Series of 27 races.
