Southport Yacht Club hosted the 2012 International Etchells Class Queensland State Championships with 20 entrants sailing in perfect Queensland conditions, offshore from the beautiful Gold Coast beaches. The Queensland Sate Titles where run over the weekend of the 24-25 November at Southport Yacht Club.

International sailor Mark Thornburrow from Hong Kong on Racer X, and his crew of Andy Service, Bucky Smith and Simon Cooke sailed to first in the six race series with a score of eight points. Matthew Chew with his crew Brian Donavan, Paul Wyatt and Ashley Deeks on, Generation XY, were second on 14, with Melbourne skipper, Chris Hampton and crew of Ian Johnson and Matt Johns sailing, Tango, into third place on 20 points.

The weather for the regatta was described by Principle Race Officer, Ross Wilson, as 'Champagne Sailing', with the breeze coming out of the NNE and along with the sunny days, it all combined to make this a truly memorable regatta for all involved.

Saturday's racing began with light breezes of around nine knots that built during the day to a sensational 15-18 knots and with a slight sea running, it allowed for some close racing over the three races sailed. Sunday saw the boats starting in 12-15 knots of breeze, which built to 19-21 knots by the last race.

Southport Yacht Club would like to thank Club Marine for their continued support.

On the back of all this, it can now be confirmed that the Gold Coast fleet are to hold the next Etchells Nationals (2013/14) in November of 2013. This is something that absolutely delights us, as it will be the first time that they going to be held in our part of the country. Additional benefits of this are:

  • A good offshore racetrack, with a relatively short sail to the course
  • Good onshore facilities for sailors and families alike
  • Abundant accommodation to suit all budgets
  • Myriad of holiday facilities like golf, surf or a tax deductable conference, etc.
