The recent Etchells International eNews carried a detailed report on the first boat from our new moulds. Ian Crisp, her owner, has now sailed it several times and reports that he is very happy with it and specifically comments that it feels very stiff. Richard Hammond from the Sydney fleet, has the second boat, which is now out of the mould and we are working as quickly as possible to get the boat launched. Should you wish to see it, it will be at my place at Newport during the first couple of weeks of October. I have fielded several other enquiries over the past month and hope to convert these into sales, so we can have several vessels racing during the various regattas coming up this Summer.

We introduced a number of new ideas and custom fittings into the new boats and we have supplied a number of them to owners wanting to upgrade their older boats. Our new forestay/jib tack plate and the fibreglass tiller with the horizontal flange have both sold well and I have also had some enquiries for the new spinnaker box.

Jake Gunther recently compared a couple of our masts with some new Sparcraft masts and found ours to be lighter and stiffer than the Sparcraft version. Our masts were about 1.5kg lighter overall and 0.8kg lighter in tip weight. Our masts have always been popular for their stiffness and I knew our tip weight was just above minimum, but I had not realised they were so much lighter than the other. The UK has always been a great mast market for us and we have another order in hand for masts to go there.

With Worlds qualifiers already underway for some fleets and a season that will see the NSW States, the Australian Championships and the Worlds all sailed in the ocean, ongoing maintenance will be a very important issue. We have all the custom and proprietary parts used on our new Etchells and are still holding parts for the old Ferrari pumps.

Good Sailing,
Phil Smidmore.
