President's Report

"Australian President, Noel Paterson"

There is something about a large fleet of Etchells that gets the heart pumping and after it is all done leaving you with that feeling of wanting to come back for more.

The Murphy & Nye Etchells National Championship hosted by Lake Macquarie Yacht Club in January certainly did that and more. Fifty eight boats competed in the event on the flat water of Lake Macquarie in shifty conditions giving the viewing public a great display of tactical sailing.

By mid-regatta Adam Beashel (Steam Packet 7) looked like he had the goods to go all the way, however a masterful display by John Bertrand and Triad crew on the second last day, with two wins, left no doubt who was to be the national champion.

My congratulations to the winners, John Bertrand, Tom Slingsby and Andrew Palfrey, for their great display of sailing in taking out this championship by 31 points, obviously the benchmark to aspire to. Damien King (Barry) showed that his second place in the Worlds was no fluke by being runner up once more. Damien, as ever, was once again assisted by Simon Cunnington, Andy Butler and James Ware. Graeme Taylor (Magpie), Grant Warrington and Steve Jarvin were third, a further two points behind.

I must acknowledge the great work done by Mark Phillips, Tom Woods and their loyal band of volunteers at the LMYC for hosting such a successful, relaxed regatta.

Unfortunately the event saw the passing of Ian Knight from LMYC. Ian died while competing in the event in his boat Mojo. Ian was, to say it simply, a lovely guy, well respected by members of the local Etchells Fleet at LMYC and by the wider fraternity at national level. Ian served as National Assistant Secretary for 2005, 2006 and 2007 and his contribution was always enthusiastic and constructive. I would like to pass on my sympathy on behalf of the National Etchells Executive and the Etchells fraternity to Ian's family.

We move on to Geelong for the next much anticipated Nationals in January 2011 for more great Etchells sailing and plenty of fodder to tell some more lies.

The dates for these nationals have been confirmed; 8 to 15 January 2011. The Notice of Race will appear on the national website in due course.
