The partnership between Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club and the Lake Macquarie Etchells Fleet will see the introduction of a new annual Etchells event to be held over the 2010 Easter weekend from 1 to 4 April.

Fleet captain Peter McNeil reports Newcastle harbour now has a new marina and just before Christmas a new clubhouse for the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club was completed. Spurred on by the enthusiasm of NCYC Rear-Commodore, Paul Gleeson, the Lake Macquarie fleet are moving forward on the event organisation

McNeil reports competing yachts will be lifted-in and hauled out at the Azzura Marine facility across the waterway, then towed across to the NCYC. Racing will be on Good Friday, Saturday and Sunday with a proposed race schedule of two races per day.

The Notice of Race is due to be published early in 2010.

Accommodation options for Newcastle are varied with a five star hotel across the road from the yacht club and plenty other choices within close distance to the club.

While the event organisers are looking for a lead sponsor, the have already secured the support of Azzura Marine, Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club and Doyle Sails Lake Macquarie.

"The event fits in with the Etchells calendar. Newcastle will be a great place to sail out of as it is similar to Mooloolaba. It has a short trip out of the harbour to the ocean, the harbour facilities are good and it is close to the Hunter Valley if the wife wants to go out there. There is plenty to do.

"The race course is on open water," NcNeill reports.

Further information on the regatta is available from Peter McNeill on (02) 4948 1331.
