Nice one, Mark!

Well done to Mark 'Perfect Balance' Bulka, who collected the Yachting Victoria Sailor of the Year award recently. Like many an Etchells sailor, he's in demand to go and partake of other styles of craft. In Mark's case, it has been to drive the Doyen of Victorian yachting's Sydney 38, Challenge. Like our own, this OD Class is also fiercely competitive and Lou Abraham's team are the reigning champions. Whilst it is not their first time for holding that particular trophy, more like fifth, it was enough to have Mark not only very appreciative of winning the coveted Sailor of the Year award, but deeply humbled by the experience that Lou and crew chief, Rowan Simpson, had been able to offer him. Over the last while, Class President, Jake Gunther had also been spotted on board, as the ultra-experienced and close-knit crew of Challenge went about their business of showing the rest of the near-40-somethings, just where all the marks of the course were around Port Phillip and other places.

Now on another note, it has simply been wonderful to see how many people are commenting on the increasing enquiry and participation from new-to-Etchells sailors and this in itself is worth underlining. At the same time, this pic from our own Kylie Wilson came across my desk. It is from around 1987, when she was just a little girl and her own Father was partaking in a weekend race with the Sydney Fleet.

The old E22 logo and KA sail numbers are more than a dead give away, but it is a great way to underscore that whilst everything remains the same, nothing is immune to change. Now with all of that in mind, firstly I'd like to thank the contributors and then also point out that you probably have something to add to the Class via this newsletter. You may not think it, you may not believe you have the skills required, but there have been more than a few who did not think they could do it and who now regularly tap away and put words together that we then turn in to an article. Please make contact if you would like to begin that particular journey with your Etchells experience.
