Planning is well underway for the Zhik International Etchells 2012 Australian Championship, to be hosted by Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club from 9th to 14th February, 2012.

Regatta Director, David Ritchard, expects about 80 boats will be on the start line in February. With such a large fleet, comparable in numbers to a World Championship, a lot of planning is needed to cater for the event. .

Ritchard advises that the proposed event schedule is for registration and pre-measurement for the World Championship to be conducted on Thursday 9th and Friday 10th February. "The pre-measurement will involve measuring the physical attributes of the boats; it is weighed and then it's compliance certificate checked, along with bulkheads and safety equipment. We may also measure mast bury, but we will not be measuring sails. .

"The plan is to measure as many boats as possible before the sailing commences for the Nationals, so that it takes the load off when the boats go down to Sydney," Ritchard said. .

International Chief Measurer, Denis Heywood, hopes to commence boat measurements for the Worlds, in Pittwater in the week before the Nationals. .

The race program is scheduled to be four days straight, with two races each day from 11th to 14th February. This makes a total of eight races, with five to make a series and possibly only one drop. .

On the Wednesday and Thursday after the Nationals, all boats to race in the World Championship will be moved to Sydney. "Some will go by road and for those that choose to sail down, we will probably provide a shepherding service for them," Ritchard said. .

The Nationals Notice of Race will be issued on the event website in early December. The online entry system will then be opened by about 15th December. .

"I am looking forward to welcoming a large fleet for the Nationals. We are expecting quite a few of them will also be competing in the World Championship." .

"The welcome mat will also be out for all Australian fleet members, so hopefully many of them, even if they don't qualify for the Worlds, will still compete at the Nationals." .
