President's Report

14 July 2011 Noel Paterson

Australian President, Noel Paterson

"Australian President, Noel Paterson"

Congratulations to each of the sixteen Australian Etchells crews who competed in the recent Worlds in San Diego. This is a great representation by the Australian Fleet to a distant destination and yet another display of our willingness to travel.

In particular, congratulations must go to Noel Drennan and crew for their fast finishing second place, in a USA dominated top twenty. Well done 'Nitro'. I must also make mention of Michael Hiatt, who must be happy with his very creditable seventh. Yet a further display of his rising performance in the class.

The Musto Australasian Championship was once again conducted over the long weekend in June, which unfortunately clashed with the Worlds this time. This no doubt cost the event some numbers, however a Fleet of forty-one rolled up for the start. Trev and his team must be happy with that. Congratulations to Tom King and Co. on taking out the regatta. This is no doubt a good base on which to build for the Worlds in Sydney next year.

The Mooloolaba regatta presented us with the opportunity to display the first hull out of the new Australian mould. My thanks in particular to the new owner of hull #1, Ian Crisp, for allowing his new boat to be towed from Nowra to Mooloolaba and back to Sydney, prior to it's fit out. This is a generous display of support for the Class by Ian and I would like to thank him very much for that. Thanks also to Dave Ritchard, our National Treasurer, for taking the time and effort to tow the boat up and back. We are currently holding a further order and have several interested parties scratching at the door.

It has been a big year for the National Executive, with the completion of several major projects. Not the least of these has been the 'new mould' and the 'online membership registration.' The continuation of our marketing campaign and communication with our membership, via mediums such as this 'Quarterly ENews', are of paramount importance.

The National AGM is looming and is to be held at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron on 1st August. Having had two stints, totalling five years as National President, I shall not be standing for this position again this year. I feel we need fresh, younger blood to compliment the existing wisdom on the Executive and the time is right for a change.

My thanks to the other members of the Executive; Ian Kingsford Smith, Dave Ritchard, Jake Gunther and David Healey for their endless support and their expertise in keeping me on the straight and narrow. Each of these people has boundless commitment to the Etchells Class and it is from them that I have learned so much.

On to the next regatta,
