The 2010/11 season marks the 28th year of the Etchells Class in South Australia. It also marks the 25th year of involvement in our class by fleet stalwart, David Henshall, which is a significant milestone that just could not be overlooked.

To acknowledge David's contribution, from this season onwards, the winning skipper of the Adelaide Fleet World Championship Qualifying Series will be presented with the Henshall Shield. The series was run prior to Christmas and as a result, the first ever Henshall Shield winner and in a convincing manner at that, was Jason Ward in, Ruby (AUS1258). For several seasons now, Jason has threatened to collect some silverware, being runner up in the 09 State Champs and always finishing in the leading pack.

David Henshall is an RSAYS Life Member and former Commodore. He has represented the Adelaide Fleet at various National and World Championships around the globe with distinction and is a wonderful ambassador for our class. In fact, the Adelaide Fleet may well have folded in the late '90's when several boats were sold Interstate and local numbers declined to alarming levels. At one stage the Adelaide fleet only had seven Etchells racing, of which David owned four! The creation of the Henshall Shield is a small, but highly visible recognition of David's efforts. No doubt the Henshall Shield will be a highly sought prize by our skippers from now on.

Finally then, congratulations to fleet member, Caillin Howard, who sails on Stretch (AUS1129). He helped crew Secret Men's Business 3.5 to overall honours in the 2010 Sydney-Hobart Classic and then just a couple of weeks later was competing in the Gorell Group National Etchells Titles in Geelong, despite being in considerable pain with broken ribs and shoulder damage incurred during the Hobart.
