The Notice of Race is out, the online entry system ready and the organising team are firing on all cylinders, as the June long-weekend, Musto Etchells Australasian Winter Championship fast approaches.

This year, Fleet Captain Trevor Martin, expects the 14-year record of no skipper successfully defending their title to topple. "With the quality and quantity of teams talking about competing at the Winters this year, there has to be a very good chance for the record to be broken. Having said that, reigning World and National title holder, John Bertrand won't be here to get his first ever Mooloolaba title, so perhaps somebody else will come in and fill the breech for their first time", said Trevor.

The path to glory for the ultimate winner won't be straight forward, with last year's winner, New Zealander Alastair Gair, crossing the Tasman again this June to defend his Winter title. He is also likely to have in tow another two New Zealand entries.

The word from Mooloolaba fleet member Simon Ellis, who recently visited Hong Kong for the Fleet Championship, is that up to four Hong Kong boats will also be competing.

This year's event will see only a few changes to the event management formula that has proven to be so successful during its history.

Early arrivals are being encouraged to compete in the Sail Mooloolaba regatta being held on the weekend of June 4 and 5. Details of the event are on the event website www.sailmooloolaba.yachting.org.au This event is growing with both the Sunshine Coast Regional Council and Events Queensland supporting it in its second year.

Any Etchells arriving into Mooloolaba from June 1 will have free hardstand storage until the June 12 at the Mooloolaba Marina, courtesy of the Mooloolaba Etchells Fleet.

On the water, Phill Collyer will be in charge of the race team. Collyer is well known to the Victorian Etchells sailors and to those sailors who competed in the recent NSW State championship. Protest Committee chairman, Ken Moxham, is back and hoping not to have too much work to do.

Lead sponsor Musto is planning some great heat prizes and an interesting twist to their Musto fashion show. They will also have some smart event shirts for sale at the event office.
