The Lake Macquarie Etchells Fleet is looking forward to another very active season on the Lake, with 18 boats on the register. Racing commenced on 4 September, with our normal two races per week, wherein the Fleet Championship and yearly point score results being continuous over the season.

Unfortunately our Fleet Captain, Mark Philips, has decided to have a break after about 10 years of official duties with the LMYC Etchells. Mark has done a great job over the years and on behalf of the LMYC fleet, I would like to thank Mark for his tireless dedication over such an extensive period.

During the off-season, a number of fleet members have been active, with six boats competing in the Winter Nationals at Mooloolaba.

Dave Gleadhill purchased Iris III in Europe, then teamed up with Peter McNeil and Tom Woods to compete in and win, the Irish National Championships. The team followed up to be one of nine Australian boats competing in the Etchells worlds at Howth Yacht Club in Ireland.

Unfortunately the fleet champions from last season, Todd and Dean Wyborn, have sold their boat to Dave Nicholls and will only be sailing on a casual basis this year. Dean will probably have his hands full, as he is awaiting the birth of his first child in November. Fortunately we have not lost Dave's old boat from the fleet, as Robert Chapman has purchased Wings from Dave and will be competing for his first season in Etchells.

On the 2nd and 3rd of October, LMYC Fleet will once again host the spring regatta on the beautiful waters of Lake Macquarie. It is a great weekend, with lots of action on the water and in the bar. This is a particularly special year, as challengers will be aiming to depose the World Champion, John Bertrand, as the winner of this most coveted trophy (John may come back to defend his title).

The LMYC Fleet will also host the 2011 NSW Etchells Championships from 11th to 13th of February 2011. The regatta will be sailed off Newcastle in the waters of Stockton Bight and Merewether Triangle. It is hoped that our sailors will take the experience of competition on open water into the Sydney worlds, which will be hosted by the RSYS and will be sailed in the ocean off Sydney.

Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club has also committed to host the Easter Etchells Regatta again in 2011. Last year's regatta was a great success, with Peter McNeil becoming the inaugural champion. This is a great way to finish the sailing season with families being able to sample the delights of Newcastle's great beach culture, while mum and/or dad are sailing offshore behind the surf.

As usual, the LMYC Etchells fleet will host a day of racing for Hunter Academy of Sport elite sailors on Lake Macquarie on Sunday 12th September. This has previously proved to be a great day with the young sailors showing the old hands a few tricks and some Etchells skippers finding muscles they didn't know existed, whilst crewing for our elite youth sailors.
